Therapy For You
My role as a therapist in the room is to be a caring and accepting force for my clients – to embody what unconditional acceptance, care, and support can look like in real time. While this varies depending on the client, the session, and what we are working on, this is the foundation of the work.
This does not mean blindly agreeing with everything a client says. Rather, when someone comes in carrying shame, hurt, pain, or trauma, my role is to be a steady, grounded presence that isn’t afraid. My job is to bring curiosity, not judgment, and to join clients where they are.
Being met with curiosity and care around experiences that feel terrifying, unsafe, or deeply shame-filled is profoundly healing. This is “the work” we often talk about. A colleague and dear friend of mine describes it as sitting in the storm alongside someone — holding the umbrella when they need help, and waiting out the storm with them so they are not alone.
